What does Alter ego mean in American Law?
The definition of Alter ego in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
"Alter ego" means "the other self" or "the other I," i.e., a person having a very strong form of agency, totally representing another, e.g., during a voyage the master of a ship may be said to be the "alter ego" of the owner. But no one is ever totally the alter ego of anyone else; even during the voyage the master cannot licitly dally with the owner's wife.
