Meaning of Certified Check
A check that has been accepted for payment by the drawee. means that the bank undertakes, on presentation, to pay the amount of the check. A check drawn by a depositor upon funds to his credit in the bank, which the proper officer of the bank certifies will be paid when duly presented for payment. Flolland v mutual Fertilizer Co., 70 S.E. 151, 8 Ga.App. 714. §3-411 ofU.C.C. provides: (1) Certification of a check is acceptance. where a holder procures certification the drawer and all prior indorsers are discharged. (2) unless otherwise agreed a bank has no obligation to certify a check. (3) A bank may certify a check before returning itfor lack of proper indorsement. If it does so the drawer is discharged.
Certified Check Alternative Definition
A check which has been recognized by the proper officer as a valid appropriation of the amount of money therein specified to the person therein named, and which bears upon itself the evidence of such recognition. Certification of a check is usually accomplished by writing the name of the officer authorized to bind the bank in that manner across the face of the check. See "Check." Sewell, Bank.
