Meaning of Chattels
All goods movable and immovable , except such as have the nature of freehold. Any kind of property which, having regard either to the subject matter or the quantity of interest therein, is not freehold. Carrington v state , 86 So. 344, 80 Fla. 494. Chattels can be divided into two classes. personal chattels, namely such as are movable and would include animals as well as goods. Chattels real which concern or savor of realty. These are estates or interests in or arising out of lands. where the duration of an estate is uncertain it is characterized as a freehold..If the duration is fixed then it is a chattel real. Thus, a lease for a term of years is a chattel real, while a gift to the same person for life will be, under common law , a freehold estate.
