Definition of Gideon V. Wainwright (1963)
In relation to social issues, a meaning of gideon v. wainwright (1963) is provided here: the United States Supreme Court ruled that in federal and state criminal cases involving serious criminal cases involving serious crimes, the court must appoint a lawyer to represent an accused person who cannot afford one. In 1972 the United States Supreme Court extended the right to counsel even further. It ruled that an accused person cannot be sent to jail for any offense unless he or she has either been represented by counsel or voluntarily given up that right. This ruling covers all cases that could involve imprisonment, no matter how minor the crime.
