Meaning of Counterclaim
A cause of action asserted by one or more defendants against one or more plaintiffs. An affirmative effort to enforce or collect upon an affirmative claim. As such it is different from a set off or recoupment. It is not a defense on the merits but is an independent cause of action and must be complete within itself. Helle v Brush, 275 N. E.2d 688, 2 III. App.2d 951.

English Legal System: Counterclaim
In the context of the English law, A Dictionary of Law provides the following legal concept of Counterclaim:
A cross-claim brought by a defendant in civil proceedings that asserts an independent cause of action but is not also a defence to the claim made in the action by the claimant. A counterclaim is an example of a *Part 20 claim, being a claim other than one made by the claimant against the defendant.
