Meaning of Dissolution
The act of putting an end to a legal relation. Thus the dissolution of a contract is the cancellation or abrogation of it by the parties themselves. The dissolution of a corporation means the termination of its existence as a body politic, either by an act of the legislature or by the surrender or forfeiture of its charter or articles of incorporation , or by appropriate proceedings for winding it up under the applicable laws. In family law, the term denotes the terminating of a marriage by the granting of a final decree of divorce.
Dissolution Alternative Definition
In Contracts. The dissolution of a contract is the annulling thereof by the contracting parties. Of Corporations. The termination of the corporate existence in any manner, whether by expiration of the charter, decree of court, act of the legislature, etc. In Practice. The act of rendering a legal proceeding null, or changing its character; as, a foreign attachment in Pennsylvania is dissolved by entering bail to the action; injunctions are dissolved by the court.

The term dissolution is used to describe an adoption that fails after finalization, resulting in the child's legal custody reverting back to the agency or court that made the original placement and the child returning to foster care and/or to other adoptive parent(s).
