Meaning of Merchandise
goods , commodities and wares as are ordinarily the objects of trade and commerce , whether sold wholesale or retail. The term is inappropriate to refer to realty.
Merchandise Alternative Definition
(Lat. mera;). A term ineluding all those things which merchants sell, 'either wholesale or retail; as, drygoods, hardware, groceries, drugs, etc. It is usually applied to personal chattels only, and to those which are not required for food or immediate support but such as remain after having been used, or which are used only by a slow consumption. See Pardessus, note 8; Dig. 13. 3. 1; Id. 19. 4. 1; Id. 50. 16. 66; 8 Pet, (U. S.) 277; 6 Wend. (N. Y.) 335. Mere evidences of value, as bank bills, are not merchandise. The fact that a thing is sometimes bought and sold does not make it merchandise. Story, J., 2 Story, C. C. (U. S.) 10, 53, 54. See 2 Mass. 467; 20 Pick. (Mass.) 9; 3 Mete. (Mass.) 367; 2 Pars. Cont. 331, note (w). Nor are baggage (6. Fed. 413) tools or facilities (26 Ind. 294), or animals kept for use; though otherwise if they were imported for purpose of sale only (22 Vt. 655).
Financial Definition of Merchandise
All movable goods such as cars, textiles, appliances, etc. and 'f.o.b.' means free on board.
International Trade Meaning and Definition of Merchandise
Includes goods, wares, and chattels of every description except Prohibited Merchandise, building materials, production equipment and supplies for use in operation of a zone.
