Meanings, Synonyms, Etymology, Translations and More
Meaning of Reputation
Good name, honor, credit. It is that which the public says about a person. In the context of admissability of evidence , the term means what a person is thought to be by others; what is generally believed about a person with respect to particular trait of character involved. See People v Paisley, 29 Cal.Rptr. 307, 214 C. A.2d225. The term is not strictly synonymous with character since character denotes what a person is whereas reputation is what one is thought to be. See Hassell v state , 92 So.2d 194, 229 Miss. 824.
Reputation Alternative Definition
The opinion generally entertained in a community regarding any matter. Thus, certain matters of pedigree may be proved by common repute. Most commonly used in the sense of personal reputation, the opinion entertained regarding a man in a community. "Reputation" is to be distinguished from "character" (q. v.) Character is what a person is; reputation is what he is supposed to be. Character is injured by temptations and wrongdoings; reputation, by slanders and libels. Abbott. See 26 N. Y. 203.
