Meaning of Underwriter
An insurer, expecially one who joins with other insurers in entering into a policy of insurance. The term is particularly used in relation to marine insurance policies which generally are subscribed to by more than on insurer. Also, the subscriber for shares of a corporation before they are offered to the public and who enter into an agreement with that corporation that in the event of the public not taking all the shares of the number mentioned in the agreement, they will take the shares which the public do not take. Such an agreement is in effect a guaranty given by the underwriters to the corporation in relation to the number of shares that will be taken up by the public.
Underwriter Alternative Definition
In insurance. The party who agrees to insure another on life or property, in a policy of insurance. He is also called the insurer.
Financial Definition of Underwriter
A party that guarantees the proceeds to the firm from a security sale, thereby in effect taking ownership of the securities. Or, stated differently, a firm, usually an investment bank, that buys an issue of securities from a company and resells it to investors.
